I've just seen Aaron Lennon score his first goal for Tottenham, and it got me excited about the future of English football. I'm all for david beckham, for now, but his presence wide right in the England team removes the threat a real winger brings; pace, dribbling and getting to the byline.
It's too late in the day and too early in Lennon's career for for the 18 year old to make Sven's World Cup squad. Shaun Wright-Phillips is already established as the pacy right winger in the squad, and he'll likely be starting on the bench. But post-Germany I'd love to see Lennon given his chance.
Either the next England boss won't have puppy eyes for Becks like Sven does, or at some point the former Brylcream salesman will retire from international football. When this happens I look forward to a future of wingers.
We all saw the effect SWP had coming on against Uruguay. He beat his man, got to the byline and crossed for Joe Cole to score the winner. In the near future (Euro 2008?) England could have a choice of SWP and Lennon thrusting down that flank.
