La Liga Players Strike To Secure Payment Guarantee From Spanish Soccer Federation

La Liga, the professional soccer league of Spain, which was about to get under way this weekend, was stalled due to a players strike. Players of all 20 clubs in the Spanish soccer league have gone on a strike in order to secure salary payment guarantees from LFP, the Spanish soccer federation. It has been reported that the second division league would also be a part of the strike which if proceeds would be the first such strike in Spanish soccer history since 1984. These events have been sparked off primarily due to the economic crisis in Spain which has in turn resulted from the global financial instability. A large number of clubs have been rendered laden with debts, and this has further increased Spanish soccer's problems as more and more clubs throw in the towel and seek the protection of their creditors.
