Messina player and Ivory Coast international Marco Zoro pulled the plug on his side's match with Inter Milan this weekend as home and visiting fans alike continued their racial abuse of him from the stands. In the 66th minute Zoro picked up the match ball and walked off the field in protest, only returning after much persuasion by players from both sides.

Zoro said the disgusting fan behavior had been a fixture of his career in Italy, but he had finally reached his limit and felt his action would draw needed attention to the problem, which is endemic in some areas of Europe.

The Italian league plans a five minute delay of all matches this coming weekend as a show of solidarity against racism in the game. UEFA has also weighed in, considering match abandonment as a possible recourse for referees.
