A global journey…

Everyone's been waiting for months, and the World Cup 2010 finally kicked off in South Africa yesterday. A glorious opening ceremony celebrating the best of African culture was the theme, and the sight of the South African football team striding out on to the pitch for the first game while singing and clapping was nothing short of inspiring. The home side were determined not to become the first to lose in the opening game on home soil and they did not disappoint. An absolutely astounding goal from Siphiwe Tshabalala set the bar high for strikers this summer both in skill and celebration, and the South Africans were 1-0 up. A dream start looked possible, until Rafael Marquez struck for the Mexicans 12 minutes from time to secure an opening draw.

What was expected to be a walkover group for the French is proving to be more of a challenge than first thought. Group A not only saw the draw between South Africa and Mexico, but Uruguay held the favourites of the group to a bore draw. Most of the chances fell to Atletico Madrid's striker Diego Forlan, who looks set to impress this summer. Expect big clubs to come looking for him after the Cup ends on the 11th July.
