As England go into their meaningless friendly against the USA tonight there will only be one matter of any real interest. How will John Terry get on as the captain of the side.

He is the third man to wear the armband under Capello as the manager continues his tactic of sharing the honour around before selecting his permanent captain for the World Cup qualification campaign before the end of the summer.

Steve Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand have been the trialists so far and John Terry is now added to the list. You can add David Beckham to the list as well as Capello knows all about the qualities of that player from his time at Real Madrid.

So who has the best shout for the captaincy in the long run? Personally I would discount David Beckham, not because of his qualities as a captain, but because he can't be guaranteed a regular place in the side over the next couple of years.

John Terry has many supporters but I believe he has done himself considerable harm with his attitude towards officials and opposition players this year and Capello may not feel he could trust the Chelsea man in the long term.

Steve Gerrard is pretty much guaranteed his place in the side injury willing, but he is still to produce the performances as both a player and a captain for England that he regularly does for Liverpool. Capello has already said that finding out why players can't produce for England what they produce for their clubs is one of his main aims. Gerrard is definitely one of the players he is referring to.

So we are left with Rio Ferdinand. A little immature in the past and some major disciplinary issues that have been well documented. There is no doubting his talent as a player and this season he has shown a new level of maturity whilst skippering Manchester United to the Premiership and Champions League double.

To me, Ferdinand looks to be the best bet. I'm not a betting man but I reckon Capello is thinking the same way. Might be worth a couple of quid!
