Where to start with England's failings? Paul Robinson actually had a great game (backpass blooper excepted) which speaks volumes about how poor England were. None of the back three, not even Rio Ferdinand, have enough composure or class to confidently play the ball from the back (remember Rio getting caught in possession
and having to pull at the Croatian forwards shorts?)
Turns out neither Gary Neville nor Ashley Cole are cut out to play wingback, neither offering any penetration down either flank. If you play three in the middle, one of them needs to be a playmaker, with a trick or two up their sleeves. It's not enough that Frank Lampard "gets forward," anyone can do that. Someone has to dictate and create. Last but not least, as discussed yesterday, Rooney and Crouch are too similar to be an effective partnership because they both like to come deep.
