UEFA Plans To Limit Chelsea Spending Power

There are plans to limit the spending power of clubs like Chelsea by tying expenditure to income. Roman Abramovich (center) currently sinks endless amounts of his own pocket change into Chelsea, effectively subsidising the whole operation.

But UK Sports Minister Richard Caborn attended a meeting in Brussels recently where a plan was discussed "introducing a better relationship between income earned by clubs and the amounts spent."

Under the new proposals, which are yet to be finalised, the amount clubs can spend on transfer fees and salaries would be in direct ratio with their income, limiting the amount Roman can shell out on diminutive Manchester City wingers.

Good News Because:

It would make competition between teams fairer by preventing owners like Abramovich using their bottomless pockets to buy up every player going. A more even playing field should make for a more exciting Premiership.

Bad News Because:

Teams like Chelsea will be even more desperate to make money from their fans. Ticket prices and replica shirt prices will skyrocket. In two years time the scarf that kid is wearing will cost around £6,000.

Sure, prices will go up, but I think a more balanced approach to spending will do several things, the best of which is making players more affordable. Stands to reason that as players are priced out of the market by these new regulations, players would be bought and sold for less. Not sure if that logic works or not, but sounds reasonable to me.

Regardless, it would make for more parity and that is a good thing. Salary caps or basic spending limits wouldn’t be too bad either, I don’t think. That’s probably the only thing American sports have going for them other than the TV rights…
