Here's a quick run-down of the films and events I'm planning to attend and dutifully report back on from the Tribeca Film Festival:
"TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! What the industry learned at Faber College." April 29th at 7 p.m. - Harold Ramis ( director of "Animal House", "Caddyshack", "Groundhog Day"), Todd Phillips (director of "Old School", "Road Trip") and Jeff Garlin (Larry David's agent in "Curb Your Enthusiasm") discuss the role of subversive comedies in the American film industry.
"The One Percent" April 30th an noon - Most documentaries about the rich / poor divide in America are made by people outside of the one percent who control around half of the US's wealth. However, this film was directed by Jamie Johnson, heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune.
"Al Franken: God Spoke" April 30th 6.p.m. -
Documentary charting Al Franken's transformation from right-wing bashing comedian to real politician.
"Downloading At A Screen Near You" May 1st 7 p.m. - Panel with Steven Soderbergh ("Traffic", "Out Of Sight" etc) discussing the future of digitally downloaded movies. Is cinema due for the same digital revolution the music industry went through? I'll let you know.
"Five Fingers" May 1st 9:30 p.m.
Psychological thriller in which an aid worker is kidnapped by terrorists in Morocco. This promises to be tense and intelligent raising questions about torture and terrorism. Directed by Laurence Malkin, starring Ryan Phillipe and Laurence Fishburne.
"What Would Jesus... Direct?" May 2nd 1 p.m. - Panel featuring cuba Gooding Jnr. discussing the massive Christian based film market that exists in the wake of Mel Gibson's gory religious blockbuster "The Passion Of The Christ".
