Romario finally made his debut in US soccer this weekend, playing for Miami FC in the less than glamorous USL Division 1. The 40 year old legend failed to get on the score-sheet as Miami lost 3-0 to the alliteratively monikered Rochester Raging Rhinos. The old fella was impressed with standards in the second tier of US soccer. "Truthfully I did not expect to play against such a strong team like theirs," he said. "We have to recognize that all matches will be tough."
Let's resist the urge to add Romario to the all-washed-up pile just yet. He's just getting over a calf injury and hasn't played for a while, plus Rochester are one of the better USL Div 1 teams, despite their rather silly name.
I just hope his stint at Miami isn't one of those short lived, ill-advised, 'Gazza goes to China' career twilight disasters. If Romario does a full season at Miami F.C., notches a few goals and draws in a few curious Floridian punters, then it will all be worthwhile.
