Mo Johnston
(that's him on the right) has been fired by New York Red Bulls (or Red Bull New York, depending on who you ask). "The decision was based on results and performance of the team on the field and the decision was made late last night," said Managing Director Marc De Grandpre.
This has been coming for a while. Red Bull bought the team, invested heavily and expect success. It was thought the Red Bull folks would send Mo Jo on his way the day after taking over, but they've given him a fair run.
Assistant Richie Williams (that's him on the left) is temporarily in charge, but the next boss will be a big name with a big pay packet. Seems they want a coach with a reputation big enough to attract big name players. Early rumours are that Bruce Arena (current US manager and native New Yorker) could be tempted. A big money deal, the chance to build a team, shape the future of MLS, and the freedom to take a senior role with the US Soccer Federation would all suit Arena perfectly right now.
