Kevin Keegan is the king of the Toon

The other day I wrote an article accepting that I may have been wrong about Steven Gerrard when I had written criticism of him in the past. Today, it is Kevin Keegan's turn to receive my gracious apologies.

I have said all along that the appointment of King Kev at Newcastle was a very strange decision. It was one that could only lead to disaster and I felt sure that Newcastle would either go down or at least come very close to it. After eight games without a win I was feeling very smug and full of admiration for my wonderful judgement.

Then what happens? They win three games in a row and move to mid table respectability. I have to hold my hands up and say well done to Keegan, because the team that beat Tottenham 4-1 and Reading 3-0 bore absolutely no resemblance to the team I watched capitulate to humiliating defeat at Aston Villa just a few weeks ago.

There is no doubt in my mind that Keegan has done an incredible job to turn things around at St James' as the club were in danger of going into freefall. He seems to have instilled a winning mentality and a team spirit that was so obviously missing before. He has got Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Oba Martins playing together and scoring and more amazingly than that, he has organised a back four into looking like they might be able to defend.

They are a long way short of the top teams in the Division, but in a very few weeks he has transformed the side to become a long way ahead of the worst teams.

I love two quotes that Keegan has come out with this week. When asked if he would be seeing the owner Mike Ashley after the win on Saturday he said, "Will I be sitting down with the owner tonight? I don't think it will be tonight. The owner will be going down the town to have a few!"

In relation to the famously 'large' Mark Viduka, Keegan joked, "With all the movement we've got up front, we need someone to stand still...and Mark's that man!"

Two great quotes from a man who must have surprised even himself with the turnaround he has achieved. Of course, if he stays at St James' for next season there will be a whole new pressure. The toon army will be expecting that first trophy again. The expectations will be unreasonably and illogically high and Keegan will exude the confident air of a man who will produce the goods.

I don't think even the 'Geordie Messiah' can achieve that in one season, but I hope Keegan is remembered for the amazing job he has performed this season.
