A global journey…

People are getting too stressed about who the next England manager's going to be. I'd just like to remind everyone that the search for a new boss is one of the more pleasant experiences involved in following England.

A new manager means an unwritten future. The next man might not have puppydog eyes for Beckham and Hargreaves. He might break up the underperforming Lampard/Gerrard midfield machine and give Carrick a chance. Maybe he'll play three at the back, or use proper wingers or maybe even a new formation so advanced that we can't even conceive it in our minds yet. Who knew Terry Venables would come up with the Christmas Tree? Not me.

Of course our hopes will be dashed once we get accustomed to the new man. Remember the optimistic idea that Glenn Hoddle would right past wrongs and build an England team around the maverick skills of Matt Le Tissier? He didn't. He built the team around Darren Anderton instead, but for a while anything seemed possible.
