Players
by Graham Fisher on March 20, 2008

What a fabulous game it was at White Hart Lane last night as Tottenham and Chelsea fought out a thrilling 4-4 draw. The game had everything, great goals, great saves, bad misses, heavy tackles and John Terry and Robbie Keane behaving in the very poor manner to which we have become accustomed.
These two players are captains of their sides and I have no doubt that they are fine leaders, fine players and respected by their teammates. However, I know this might sound old fashioned, but shouldn't a captain be a role model? Shouldn't they know how to behave?
The FA are trying to develop their 'respect agenda' which is trying to rid the game of it's bad language, bad behaviour and develop greater respect for referees. It is a welcome initiative but the FA are targetting youth football and lower league football in the first instance. Whilst we have spoilt brats behaving the way these two do a the very top of our game in front of the cameras of the world, what chance do the FA have at youth level?
Robbie Keane is a wonderful player. The equalising goal he scored in the dying minutes was a goal of great quality. He has no doubt raised his hero status amongst Tottenham fans to new levels. Watching the highlights of the game with my young son I feel that Keane is anything but a hero. He was booked for something he said to the referee and then continued to argue and contest every decision that went against Tottenham for the whole of the game.
Free kick to Chelsea? Keane was in the referees face. Throw in to Chelsea? Keane was in the referees face. He was snarling and angry and unpleasant. That is not an example I want my children to follow. How do you tell a child to watch a player, learn from everything he does, but ignore the arguing, bad language and other bad behaviour?
Then we come to the worst offender in English football at the moment. The man who believes that he is above the rules and deserving of special treatment. Fabio Capello was at White Hart Lane last night and I just hope that he saw enough not to make John Terry the captain in his England squad he announces today.
If Terry is made England captain that would send a terrible message out to youngsters everywhere and would completely destroy the respect agenda. John Terry shows no respect for referees at all in any game.
Last night, Ashley Cole committed a horrible tackle. It was a lunge and he missed the ball and hit the player at shin height. In the current climate he should have been shown the red card. He argued and behaved petulantly knowing that he was in the wrong. I would expect nothing less from Cole. The most depressing part of the whole unsavoury incident was John Terry racing half the length of the pitch to harrass the referee and plead Cole's innocence. It was nothing to do with him and was a very unpleasant spectacle.
Cole got away with a yellow card so maybe John Terry did his job as captain. If that is the case then football has gone very wrong.
Please Mr Capello, we've got some great centre halves in this country. Send the right message. Don't make John Terry your captain.
