End of Season

Filed in archive Premier League on May 31, 2010

It was the richest versus the poorest, Chelsea vs Portsmouth. Even though Portsouth were granted a penalty early in the second half, Kevin Prince Boateng was unable to beat Petr Cech and, in this David and Goliath scenario, the bad guys won. So Chelsea do the double for the first time in their history. Who, other than Chelsea fans, would have known that this was an unaccomplished achievement under Mourinho? An emphatic 8-0 win over Wigan and a thoroughly undeserved 1-0 against Portsmouth in the FA Cup Final saw the English football season come to a close with Ancelotti the new hero in West London.

Manchester City continued to press throughout the season, forever creeping up on their red neighbours who took the title push right to the last day of the season. Aston Villa continued to overachieve in their inimitable way (i.e, just not quite ever enough to make Martin O'Neill smile at anything other than one of his own jokes), while Tottenham Hotspur, the flipside of the achievement coin (all the money and nothing to show for it) managed to finally finish fourth this season, only 5 points behind north London enemies Arsenal.

A Week later, Bayern Munich took on Inter Milan, whose dreadful lack of ambition in the semi final at the Nou Camp drove anyone but the most ardent of Mourinho's supporters thoroughly behind the Germans to win. It was not to be, and Milan won the treble and saw the manager off. What a surprise that his latest "challenge" is to take on the job at Real Madrid.

They are regularly the talk of the back pages, and we have yet to mention Liverpool. Well, as we embark upon what Ian Rush has already called the "most important summer in the history of the club" and we currently have no news for you, here's a song for all the Liverpool fans.

It's the long summer transfer window, so be ready for regular ridiculous updates. More importantly, though, bring on the World Cup...
