Champions League

The Champions League group stage continues this week and with the first night of matches over, some important games have ended with equally important results, with the scoring of some memorable goals. Surprises haven't been lacking too, so where does this put some of the favourites already, in terms of their qualification chances?
While Wenger followed his 2-0 win against Olympiakos with a declaration that his team should qualify early, Rafa Benitiez told reporters, that "never again" would his team put on as bad a performance as they did away to Fiorentina. Two goals were conceded and Liverpool failed to score themselves in competitive football for the first time since February. Intending to spring the offside trap, Johnson and Insua unwittingly played Stevan Jovetic (pictured) on for a simple finish to make it 1-0, while the second was a deflected bullet that Reina could do nothing to stop, despite getting two hands to the ball.

In their tough group, Liverpool already look to be struggling. When their defence looked so meagre, and Fiorentina's impenetrable, fans will be wondering what they can do to win what will be a crucial match, their next at home to Lyon. Lyon lead the group with six points, having set about destroying Debrecen from the very start in a 4-0 victory away from home.
Elsewhere it looks bad for British teams too, while Spain seems to be thriving. Rangers were beaten 4-1 at home in a match they wanted a point from if they are to hold on to their hopes of doing better than Celtic have in recent years and actually qualify for the knock out rounds. Sevilla outplayed the Scottish champions and not until the 88th minute did Nacho Novo give the home side a stunning piece of consolation.
Barcelona beat Dynamo Kiev 2-0 at home and after the last fixture they played, a tantalising away match to giants Inter Milan which ended a disappointing 0-0, it seemed that Barcelona would need to win all their games from now to the end of the group stage to finish first. Inter Milan, however, slipped up horribly and drew away to group whipping-boys Rubin Kazan, with goals from Dominguez and Dejan Stankovic being the only respite in an otherwise dismissible game.
