Bruce Arena: The American Jose Mourinho

OK, so they're not exactly the same. But the best thing Jose Mourinho brought to the Premiership was controversy. The Ferguson-Wenger mind games had grown a little dull, so Jose and his "special one" comments freshened up the back pages no end.

Like Mourinho, Bruce Arena has taken a big pressure, big money job (though New York Red Bulls can't splash the cash the way Chelsea has, salary cap and all that) and like Mourinho, Arena gives good quote.

Consider what Arena had to say about his former bosses at the US Soccer Federation in a recent Sports Illustrated piece by Grant Wahl (US soccer's best writer, for my money)

"Do you think I want to show them something? What am I going to show them? I've probably showed them the finest eight years of the national team they're going to see for a long time. I don't need to prove anything to them."

...

"I corected a lot of things that were their faults and positioned them pretty good. And they're going to find out that position isn't going to be easy to sustain. I took over a mess. And if you ever want to figure out who created that mess, think about that a little bit."

...

"There's too many people who want to be technical directors and soccer experts that aren't. They're micromanagers. U.S. Soccer needs a real thorough technical direction in terms of how you go about doing business in this sport every day, and it's not there. The national training center [at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.] is a joke in terms of a national training center. It's an amusement parklinks."

...

Sunil [Gulati] is a great guy. He's always been a good friend. I think he's a superfan who now is president. That's the way our organization is. That's unfortunate, and you add another micromanager to an organization that's already micromanaged.

...and finally, the piece de resistance...

SI.com: Who do you think should be the next U.S. coach?

Arena: I don't care, and it's none of my business.

SI.com: You care about the U.S. team, don't you?

Arena: Oh yeah. They're going to win the next World Cup, from what I'm told.

...

MLS is going to be so much more fun now Bruce is back.
