Barcelona To Wear UNICEF Logo
Filed in archive A Good Idea... by daryl on September 8, 2006

I've always loved that Barcelona refused to sell advertising space on the front of their jerseys. In a world where clubs are selling even stadium names to the highest bidder (Emirates Stadium, Reebok Stadium etc) it was refreshing that one club (who must have received some big offers over the years) refused to sell out.
So when I read that Barca were going to feature advertising on the front of their shirts for the first time in history, I nearly choked on my ramen noodles (times are hard). But don't worry, it's a good thing. Barcelona are going to be advertising UNICEF, and rather than charging UNICEF for the privilege, Barce are going to donate 0.7% of their profits to the UN child poverty
charity. That may not sound like a lot, but this seasons projected income is around 240 million euros. Add 0.7% of that figure to the value of all that prime time advertising, and UNICEF have got themselves one hell of a deal.
The five year agreement will begin when Barca wear the new UNICEF logo shirts for the Champions League match against Levski Sofia this Tuesday.
